Why UK extradition law must change as British Citizens could in theory face the death penalty.

By Henri Pearson, 22nd February 2020

In theory British citizens could face the death penalty under extradition law (Extradition act 2003), provided that governments reassure the UK government (Secretary of State) that the defendant will not face the death penalty that individual will be extradited, for those countries that still carry this out and or are less adverse to democratic society this is a commitment which could be broken very easily and by then the defendant has been executed. This would apply to commit crime against foreign citizens in this country and abroad.

Though this has never happened it's possible, many citizens have been extradited to face crimes overseas. UK law even states that the death penalty can be imposed on British citizens but it must not be carried out.
